Redactions & Public Records

Redactions, which involve concealing non-public information like personally identifiable information, may be applied to records prior to their release, in compliance with federal and state laws.

Key Points:

  • The requester will be informed of any redactions, or these will be clearly indicated.
  • In certain instances, the non-exempt portion of a document may be so closely tied to the exempt portion that redacting it could be impractical.
  • If a request is either partially or fully denied due to redactions, the requester must receive an explanation, including the legal authority for the denial.

Some records are entirely exempt from the Public Records Act, such as:

  • Trial research
  • Confidential law enforcement investigative records
  • Adoption records
